The New Scientist reports that a 10 year old girl who was born with half of her cerebral cortex missing can see. In studying why, they discovered that there was a massive reorganization of the brain circuits that were involved in vision.
Doctors originally discovered the problem when the girl was three years of age and developed seizures. They were able to stop the seizures with medication. In exploring why this child acts normally, doctors did a brain scan that showed retinal nerves “should normally connect to the right half of her brain instead set up shop in two parts of the left brain: the thalamus and the visual cortex.” It is amazing to see how adaptable our bodies are.
